Check and winterize yard hydrants
A frost-free yard hydrant protects itself only when its drain is working, the standpipe is installed correctly and no hose or closed attachment traps water.
Recommended timingEvery spring and before freezing weather
What to do
- Disconnect hoses, splitters and closed-end attachments before freezing weather so the hydrant can drain after shutoff.
- Operate the handle normally and confirm flow stops and the head drains as the manufacturer describes; never force a stiff handle.
- Look for seepage at the head, packing nut and ground surface, and keep the surrounding area graded so contaminated surface water cannot collect around the standpipe.
- Follow the exact manufacturer adjustment and lubrication instructions; internal repair or excavation belongs to a qualified plumber or well professional.
- Protect the hydrant from vehicle or equipment impact and keep it accessible during winter.
Do not connect a yard hydrant in a way that can contaminate drinking water. Backflow protection and repairs must comply with local requirements.
