Check the water-heater expansion tank
A properly sized and charged potable-water expansion tank absorbs pressure increases as heated water expands in a closed plumbing system.
Recommended timingInspect yearly; test by manufacturer instructions
What to do
- Record the tank model, installation date and required pre-charge shown by the manufacturer or plumbing professional.
- Look for leakage, corrosion, a damaged air valve, loose support or a tank hanging from piping without appropriate support.
- Ask a qualified plumber to verify system pressure and tank pre-charge on the schedule required by the manufacturer; accurate testing requires isolating water pressure.
- Have a waterlogged, leaking, corroded or incorrectly supported tank replaced rather than attempting to recharge a damaged vessel.
- Include the pressure regulator, backflow device and relief-valve behavior in the evaluation because they affect expansion pressure.
This is a pressurized vessel. Do not drill, heat, puncture or remove it while the plumbing system is pressurized.
