January’s home-care starting point

Safety reset

Start the year with the small tests that protect the household every month.

Choose your home features below to add only the system-specific tasks that apply.

Start with your inspection report

Let the report build your maintenance list.

We’ll look only for the systems, materials and features documented in a Vantage Point report. You review everything before it changes your home guide.

Maintenance guidance only—not a diagnosis or repair plan

This tool does not evaluate defects, determine severity, interpret the inspection, or tell you how to repair reported concerns. It only identifies home features so it can create a recurring maintenance list. Contact your inspector or an appropriate qualified professional about specific report findings and repairs.

New-construction homes

Make the first year count.

New materials dry, soil settles and seasonal conditions reveal things that may not be visible on inspection day.

Before your builder warranty expires

Keep dated photos, written notes and repair requests. Ask your builder how and when warranty items must be submitted.

ExteriorThrough your warranty periodWatch new concreteSmall shrinkage cracks can be common, but movement, surface breakdown and soil loss should be documented early.

What to do

  • Photograph flatwork now, then compare it after winter and before the builder warranty expires.
  • Look along slab edges for soil erosion or open voids beneath the concrete.
  • Keep roof and surface water from discharging beside walks, patios and driveways.
  • Report significant flaking, displacement or cracks wider than about 1/4 inch to the builder.
ExteriorBefore the first wet seasonConsider complete guttersMany new homes receive gutters only above doors. Full eave coverage provides better control of roof runoff around the foundation.

What to do

  • Consider gutters along all roof eaves, not only above entrances.
  • Use downspout extensions or approved underground drainage to carry water away from the home.
  • Keep gutters clean and confirm they do not overflow during rain.
  • Correct low spots that hold water next to the foundation.
ExteriorBefore final landscapingPlan for backfill settlementSoil placed back around a new foundation commonly settles. Planning for that movement can prevent negative grading and sunken window wells.

What to do

  • Wait as long as practical before final landscaping so early settlement can become visible.
  • Add and compact suitable soil where low areas develop, especially near window wells.
  • Maintain a visible slope away from the foundation and keep siding clear of soil and mulch.
  • Use a qualified landscaper or drainage contractor when grading or compaction is beyond a simple homeowner correction.
