Check the water-pressure regulator

A pressure-reducing valve helps keep incoming water pressure within the home and fixture manufacturers' acceptable range. Regulators can wear or drift over time.

What to do

  1. Confirm whether the home has a pressure regulator and record its location, model and the normal static pressure established by a plumber.
  2. Use a suitable pressure gauge at an appropriate hose connection to compare static pressure periodically, following the gauge and plumbing instructions.
  3. Recheck when faucets surge, toilet valves become noisy, appliance hoses fail, the relief valve drips or pressure changes noticeably.
  4. Have a licensed plumber diagnose pressure that is consistently outside the plumbing or appliance limits; thermal expansion can also raise pressure in a closed system.
  5. Do not repeatedly adjust, disassemble or cap a leaking regulator as a homeowner repair.
Safety and service boundary

Adjustment, rebuild or replacement should be performed by a qualified plumber, especially when pressure behavior or system configuration is uncertain.
