Cleaning & finishes

Clean hardwood flooring

The floor manufacturer and finish determine the approved cleaner. The safest general approach limits grit, standing water and steam.

Recommended timingDust regularly; damp-clean as needed

What to do

  1. Sweep, dust-mop or vacuum using a bare-floor setting; avoid a beater bar that can scratch the finish.
  2. Blot spills promptly and use only a slightly damp cloth or mop with a cleaner approved for the installed finish.
  3. Do not wet-mop or steam-clean wood flooring, and do not use wax, oil soap or polish unless the floor manufacturer specifically approves it.
  4. Use breathable mats, felt furniture pads and humidity control; keep pet nails and abrasive grit from scratching the surface.
