Care for granite and natural-stone counters

Natural stone varies. A neutral cleaner and confirmation from the stone supplier are safer than assuming every granite needs the same sealer or stain treatment.

Recommended timingClean after use; assess sealer as needed

What to do

  1. Blot spills promptly, then clean with warm water and a neutral stone cleaner, stone soap or a small amount of mild dish detergent.
  2. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and acidic products such as vinegar or lemon-based cleaner.
  3. Use cutting boards, coasters and trivets rather than cutting or placing hot items directly on the surface.
  4. Ask the fabricator or stone professional whether the installed stone needs an impregnating sealer and which food-safe product and interval apply.
