Clean and protect a wood deck
Wood needs periodic cleaning and a compatible protective finish, but structural safety comes before appearance.
Recommended timingClean yearly; reseal about every 1–3 years as needed
What to do
- Sweep debris from boards and gaps, then clean with a product and method approved for the wood and existing finish.
- Inspect boards, stairs and fasteners for splinters, cracks, rot, corrosion and protrusions.
- Reseal or restain when water no longer beads or the finish is worn—often every one to three years, depending on exposure and product.
- Keep planters elevated and prevent soil, leaves and snow from holding moisture against the deck.
