Indoor environment
Maintain an HRV or ERV ventilation system
Balanced ventilation systems bring in outdoor air while exhausting stale air. Filters, exterior hoods and the recovery core need model-specific care to preserve airflow.
Recommended timingCheck filters every 3–6 months
What to do
- Locate the model manual and label the outdoor-air and exhaust-air paths before removing any filter or core.
- Inspect and clean or replace filters every three to six months, adjusting for smoke, dust, pets and manufacturer instructions.
- With power off, inspect accessible interior surfaces and the recovery core; clean the core only with the method approved for that exact unit.
- Keep exterior intake and exhaust hoods clear of leaves, lint, snow and ice while preserving their screens and separation.
- Check any condensate drain during cold weather and arrange professional balancing or service for persistent frost, noise, odor or weak airflow.
Disconnect power before opening owner-access panels. Do not wash a paper or energy-recovery core unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
