Indoor environment

Clean and use bathroom exhaust fans

Dust reduces exhaust airflow, while consistent fan use helps move shower moisture out of the home before it condenses on finishes or enters concealed spaces.

Recommended timingClean about every 6 months; use during bathing

What to do

  1. Run the fan during bathing and afterward long enough to clear humidity; timers or humidity controls can make this easier.
  2. Turn the fan off at the switch and breaker before cleaning. Remove and wash the grille only as its instructions allow, then dry it completely.
  3. Vacuum accessible dust from the housing and grille without wetting the motor, wiring or ceiling cavity.
  4. From outdoors at ground level, look for a blocked or damaged termination and confirm the fan exhausts outdoors rather than into an attic or crawlspace.
  5. Use an electrician or ventilation contractor for a fan that does not run, is unusually noisy, moves little air or lacks an exterior discharge.
Safety and service boundary

Disconnect power before cleaning. Do not reach into wiring, motor parts or an attic solely to trace the duct.
