Water heating

Maintain a heat-pump water heater

Heat-pump water heaters add an air filter, fan, coil and condensate system to the tank. Clear airflow and drainage are essential.

Recommended timingFilter by manual; inspect yearly

What to do

  1. Clean the air filter on the schedule in the owner manual and whenever the unit displays a filter alert; DOE notes this filter needs regular cleaning.
  2. Keep required air clearances open and do not crowd the unit with storage or corrosive products.
  3. Confirm the condensate line and drain remain clear and look for water around both the tank and condensate system.
  4. Follow the tank manufacturer's anode and sediment guidance, recognizing that some models use different corrosion-protection designs.
  5. Have refrigeration, electrical, fan, coil, condensate or persistent error-code concerns serviced by a qualified technician.
Safety and service boundary

Do not open refrigeration or electrical compartments. Follow the exact manual before cleaning near the coil, fan or energized equipment.
