Test GFCI protection

Ground-fault circuit interrupters are designed to reduce shock risk, but the protection must be tested at the device—not only assumed from the presence of buttons.

Recommended timingEvery month

What to do

  1. Press TEST on each GFCI receptacle monthly; power at the protected receptacle should turn off and RESET should release.
  2. Press RESET to restore power, then verify the receptacle operates normally.
  3. Include GFCI breakers and any manufacturer-required self-test procedure in the electrical-panel instructions.
  4. Label downstream receptacles when practical so homeowners know which GFCI protects them.
Safety and service boundary

Do not remove a receptacle or panel cover. A GFCI that fails its test should be replaced by a qualified electrician.
