Check home fire extinguishers
A portable extinguisher is useful only when it is visible, reachable, appropriate for the hazard and ready to operate. Rechargeable and disposable units have different service lives.
Recommended timingInspect monthly; service or replace by label
What to do
- Confirm each extinguisher remains in its designated, readily accessible location and that everyone knows where it is.
- Check the pressure indicator when present, pull pin and tamper seal, hose or nozzle, handle, cylinder and label for damage, corrosion, leakage or obstruction.
- Read the manufacturer label for professional maintenance, hydrostatic testing, recharge and replacement requirements; do not apply one universal expiration age to every model.
- Replace or professionally service an extinguisher after any discharge, when the indicator is outside the operable range, or whenever damage or age instructions require it.
- Only attempt to extinguish a small, contained fire when everyone is evacuating, emergency services have been called, and you have a clear escape route behind you.
Life safety comes first. Leave immediately if a fire is spreading, producing heavy smoke, blocking your exit or involving an unfamiliar fuel or electrical hazard.
