Test AFCI circuit protection
Arc-fault circuit interrupters help reduce electrical-fire risk. Like GFCIs, installed AFCIs should be tested regularly instead of assumed to be working.
Recommended timingEvery month
What to do
- Identify the breakers or receptacles labeled AFCI and read the device instructions before testing; power to the protected circuit will turn off.
- With sensitive appliances safely shut down, press the AFCI TEST button. The breaker should move to its tripped or off position as its instructions describe.
- Reset the breaker using the exact handle sequence printed on the device—often fully OFF and then ON—and confirm normal power returns.
- Keep a simple list of which rooms or outlets each AFCI protects so future trips are easier to understand.
Do not remove the panel cover or troubleshoot wiring. A failed test or recurring trip requires a qualified electrician.
