Clean the clothes dryer and exhaust
Lint buildup restricts airflow and is a fire hazard. Longer drying time is often the first warning.
Recommended timingLint screen every load; exhaust duct every year
What to do
- Clean the lint screen before every load and deep-clean residue from the screen using the manufacturer-approved method.
- Clean the lint-screen slot and accessible area behind and beneath the dryer periodically after disconnecting power.
- Have the complete exhaust duct cleaned every year, or sooner when drying time increases; confirm the exterior damper opens freely.
- Use an approved metal exhaust duct, avoid crushing it behind the dryer and never operate the dryer without the lint filter.
- For a gas dryer, include the gas connector and combustion system in qualified service.
Stop using the dryer if it overheats, smells burned or has a damaged exhaust or gas connection.
