Use and care for the sink disposal

Most disposals are designed to be maintenance-free. Correct use and keeping grease out of the drain matter more than chemical cleaning.

Recommended timingEvery use; no routine internal service

What to do

  1. Run a steady stream of cool water before starting the disposal, feed waste gradually and let water run for a few seconds after grinding stops.
  2. Never pour fats, oils or grease into the disposal or drain.
  3. Use only food scraps approved for the exact disposal series; grinding capability differs by model.
  4. For odor, follow the manufacturer method. InSinkErator advises against bleach in the disposal.
  5. Disconnect power before clearing a jam and use the manufacturer's wrench/reset procedure—never put a hand in the grind chamber.
