Care for traditional wood siding

Wood siding lasts best when finish, end grain, joints and drainage are maintained before prolonged wetting causes decay.

Recommended timingInspect every spring; clean and refinish as needed

What to do

  1. Inspect paint or stain, board ends, joints, fasteners and lower edges for peeling, open checks, loose boards, softness or insect activity.
  2. Clean dirt gently with water, mild non-phosphate detergent and a nonmetal brush, following the finish manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Keep gutters working and sprinklers, soil, mulch, snow and vegetation from repeatedly wetting the siding.
  4. Repair water entry and deteriorated wood before refinishing; use a coating compatible with the species, existing finish and exposure.
  5. Preserve ventilation and drainage details rather than sealing every visible opening indiscriminately.
