Care for a built-up or tar-and-gravel roof
Built-up roofs rely on multiple asphalt and reinforcement layers, often protected by gravel or a coating. Drainage and professional surface inspection are especially important.
Recommended timingTwice a year and after major storms
What to do
- From a safe location, look for ponding water, displaced gravel, bare asphalt, blisters, splits, open seams, damaged flashings and blocked drains.
- Have a qualified low-slope roofing professional inspect the roof at least annually and after severe wind, hail, falling debris or rooftop work.
- Keep drains, scuppers and gutters clear, and have displaced aggregate redistributed or replaced only as the roofing system requires.
- Limit rooftop traffic and keep service workers on designated walk paths where provided; dropped tools and equipment can puncture or displace the surface.
- Use only repair materials compatible with the existing built-up assembly. Do not apply a coating or patch over trapped moisture without professional evaluation.
Stay off low-slope roofs unless access and fall protection are appropriate. Inspection and repair belong to a qualified roofing professional.
