Maintain a wood fireplace or stove

Creosote, damaged liners and venting problems can cause chimney fires or carbon-monoxide entry.

Recommended timingProfessional inspection and cleaning every year

What to do

  1. Have the fireplace or wood stove, chimney and vents professionally inspected and cleaned every year.
  2. Burn only dry, properly seasoned firewood and follow the appliance instructions; never burn trash, treated wood or plastics.
  3. Keep the hearth, screen, door gasket and surrounding clearances in serviceable condition.
  4. From the ground, check that the chimney cap and animal screen remain present and unobstructed, and confirm the damper moves normally before use; have binding, corrosion or damage handled during professional service.
  5. Dispose of cool ashes in a covered metal container stored outdoors on a noncombustible surface away from the home.
Safety and service boundary

Chimney inspection, sweeping and repairs belong to a qualified chimney professional.
