Well & septic
Inspect the wellhead, treatment and filters
The well, pressure equipment and any treatment filters work as one system. A short inspection helps protect water quality and avoid loss of service.
Recommended timingEvery spring; filters by condition and manual
What to do
- Check the visible casing and sanitary cap for cracks, looseness, corrosion or openings, and keep the area clear so surface water drains away from the well.
- If the pump, pressure tank or controls are in a well house or protective cover, keep it accessible, weather-protected, ventilated as designed, pest-free and safely heated or insulated against freezing without blocking service access.
- Identify every sediment, carbon, iron, softener or ultraviolet component and follow its own pressure, cartridge, media, salt or lamp schedule.
- Check replaceable filters monthly at first and change them when pressure drop, discoloration or the manufacturer's interval indicates—not by a universal schedule.
- Record filter size, replacement date, treatment settings and professional service in the home's records.
- Use a qualified well contractor for pump, wiring, pressure-tank, casing, cap, disinfection or abandoned-well work.
