Well & septic
Inspect and pump the septic system
Inspection frequency and pumping needs depend on tank size, occupancy, water use and system type. Alternative systems often need annual service.
Recommended timingInspect every 3 years; pump about every 3–5 years
What to do
- Have a septic professional inspect a typical household system at least every three years; follow the service contract for alternative systems with pumps, floats or mechanical treatment.
- Pump when the service provider recommends—commonly every three to five years—rather than waiting for a backup.
- Keep vehicles, structures, deep-rooted plants, excess irrigation and roof runoff off the tank and drainfield.
- Use water efficiently and keep wipes, grease, hazardous chemicals and non-degradable items out of drains and toilets.
- Maintain a diagram, pumping receipts and inspection reports with the property records.
