Maintain storm doors, storm windows and screens

Storm panels and screens need clear drainage, secure hardware and gentle cleaning. Sealing every opening can trap water rather than keep it out.

Recommended timingEvery spring and fall

What to do

  1. Wash glass, frames and screens with soft tools and the cleaner approved for the installed material; support removable screens while cleaning.
  2. Inspect closer operation, latches, hinges, retainers, corner keys, spline and screen fabric for looseness or damage.
  3. Keep factory drainage openings clear and confirm removable storm panels are seated in the correct seasonal position.
  4. Replace torn screens and deteriorated weatherstripping with compatible parts rather than overcaulking designed drainage or ventilation gaps.
  5. Have loose frames, cracked glass or doors that slam, bind or fail to latch corrected by a qualified professional.
