Maintain coal, corn or kerosene heating equipment
These appliances vary substantially. Safe fuel, clearances, venting, cleaning and service must come from the exact listing and manufacturer instructions—not a generic procedure.
Recommended timingBefore each heating season and by the exact manual
What to do
- Identify the make, model, listing label and only the fuels specifically permitted for the appliance.
- Keep the manual and follow its ash, burn-pot, wick, heat-exchanger, vent and seasonal-service instructions.
- Maintain required clearances and keep fuel in approved containers and locations away from ignition sources.
- Have permanently installed or vented equipment and its chimney or exhaust professionally inspected before each heating season.
- Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms monthly, provide the required combustion air and never use an appliance that smokes, leaks fuel or has damaged safety controls.
Do not substitute fuel, bypass a safety device or improvise venting. Follow local restrictions and use a qualified technician familiar with the exact fuel and appliance.
