Maintain a pellet stove

Ash, fly ash and fines collect at different rates. The exact daily, weekly and seasonal schedule must come from the appliance manual.

Recommended timingClean by fuel use; professional inspection yearly

What to do

  1. Use only the pellet grade and fuel specified by the appliance manufacturer.
  2. With the stove completely cool, empty ash and clean the burn pot, heat-exchange surfaces and glass on the manual's fuel-use schedule.
  3. Vacuum pellet fines only with equipment rated for cold ash and keep air inlets and the vent termination clear.
  4. Have the appliance, venting and chimney professionally inspected and cleaned every year.
Safety and service boundary

Never vacuum warm ash or bypass switches and sensors. Internal electrical, combustion and vent work requires a qualified pellet-appliance technician.
