Check detached sheds and outbuildings

Detached structures are easy to overlook even though roof leaks, poor drainage, pests and stored fuels can create expensive or unsafe conditions.

Recommended timingEvery spring and fall

What to do

  1. Inspect the roof, flashing, siding, trim, doors and windows using the maintenance guidance for those installed materials.
  2. Keep gutters and drainage working, maintain clearance between cladding and soil, and direct water away from the floor or foundation.
  3. Trim vegetation away, close pest openings with appropriate materials and avoid stacking firewood or damp storage against the building.
  4. Check the floor, framing and door operation for settlement, moisture, decay, corrosion or movement.
  5. Keep electrical equipment, fuel, chemicals and heat sources stored and used according to their labels and local fire requirements.
Safety and service boundary

Use qualified roofing, structural, electrical or pest professionals when the condition goes beyond safe ground-level maintenance.
