Maintain oil-fired heating equipment

Oil burners require trained service of fuel delivery, combustion, venting and safety controls. Homeowner work should stay limited to observation, airflow and the model's approved filter tasks.

Recommended timingProfessional service every year before heating season

What to do

  1. Schedule annual service with an oil-heat-qualified technician before the heating season, including burner, combustion, draft, venting, controls and applicable filters or nozzles.
  2. Follow the equipment manual for air-filter replacement and keep combustion-air openings, return grilles and the equipment area clear.
  3. Observe accessible fuel piping and the storage tank area for odor, seepage, corrosion, damaged supports or impact risk without tightening fittings.
  4. Keep the vent termination or chimney cap clear of snow and debris from a safe location.
  5. Test carbon-monoxide and smoke alarms monthly and retain fuel-delivery and service records.
Safety and service boundary

Stop using the equipment and contact the fuel supplier or qualified technician for leaks, smoke, soot or combustion concerns. Do not prime, adjust or dismantle the burner yourself.
