Care for a metal roof

Metal roofing is durable, but fasteners, seams, coatings, flashings and drainage still need periodic observation.

Recommended timingTwice a year and after major storms

What to do

  1. From the ground, look for loose or displaced panels, open seams, missing fasteners, coating damage, corrosion and damaged flashing.
  2. Keep gutters, valleys and drainage paths clear, and have branches or debris resting on the roof removed safely.
  3. Have a qualified metal-roofing professional inspect the roof periodically and after severe wind, hail or falling debris.
  4. Use only manufacturer-compatible fasteners, sealants, coatings and touch-up products; mismatched metals or products can accelerate corrosion or affect a warranty.
  5. Keep a record of the panel manufacturer, profile, finish, installer and warranty so future work matches the system.
Safety and service boundary

Stay off the roof. Metal can be slippery, sharp and easily dented; use a qualified metal-roofing professional for close inspection and service.
