Water the lawn deeply without runoff

The best schedule changes with rainfall, heat, wind, grass type, sprinkler output and soil. Deep, less-frequent irrigation is generally better than a fixed daily habit.

What to do

  1. Water early in the morning and adjust for rainfall, temperature, wind, shade and local watering rules.
  2. Use straight-sided containers or a professional audit to learn how evenly each zone applies water; correct heads that mist, leak or water pavement and siding.
  3. Check soil moisture and watch for persistent footprints or a blue-gray cast before automatically adding another watering day.
  4. On slopes, compacted ground or clay-rich soil, split the required runtime into shorter cycle-and-soak intervals.
  5. Run each zone only until pooling or runoff begins, pause about 30–60 minutes, then repeat enough cycles to deliver the planned total—not extra water.
