Care for Kentucky bluegrass in Idaho

Kentucky bluegrass is common in Idaho and forms a dense lawn, but it generally needs more water and fertility than fescues or buffalograss.

Recommended timingSpring through fall

What to do

  1. Mow roughly 2–3 1/2 inches high, matching the cultivar and season, and remove no more than one-third of the blade at a time.
  2. Use the lawn-watering guide to apply water deeply and adjust for rainfall, soil and heat rather than following a fixed daily schedule.
  3. Use only enough spring fertility to maintain color; avoid routine summer feeding during heat stress, and treat late summer to early fall as the primary Idaho fertilization window.
  4. Return ordinary clippings when they disperse. University of Idaho notes they can reduce nitrogen needs and do not create thatch.
  5. Core-aerate compacted turf during active growth and dethatch only when measurement shows a layer deeper than about 1/2 inch.
Safety and service boundary

Identify the grass and follow the exact fertilizer or pesticide label. Avoid application before heavy rain, near wells or water, or where children and pets cannot be protected.
