Maintain a whole-home humidifier
Whole-home humidifiers add water to the HVAC system. Clean media, free drainage and conservative humidity settings help prevent scale, leakage and window condensation.
Recommended timingCheck monthly in heating season; service by manual
What to do
- Identify the exact make and model, then follow its instructions for water panels, pads, canisters, drains, filters and seasonal bypass settings.
- During use, check monthly for mineral buildup, a clogged drain, standing water, leaks and condensation on windows or cool exterior walls.
- Replace the water panel or service media on the manufacturer's schedule; AprilAire commonly calls for annual replacement, with some models needing twice-per-season service.
- At season end, follow the manual to shut off the water supply and place the bypass or control in its summer position when applicable.
- Have an HVAC professional correct ongoing leaks, electrical faults, uncontrolled humidity, drain problems or internal equipment buildup.
Shut off power and water before owner-permitted service. Never work inside energized HVAC equipment or alter the furnace controls.
