Maintain a hot tub or spa

Safe spa care combines water treatment, filtration, secure covers, electrical protection and freeze protection. The exact model and sanitizer instructions take priority.

Recommended timingCheck water before use; clean and service by manual

What to do

  1. Test and balance the water at the frequency required by the spa and sanitizer manufacturers, including before use; use only compatible products and exact label directions.
  2. Rinse or clean filters on the model schedule and replace them when damaged, restricted or at their labeled service interval.
  3. Inspect the cover, locks, cabinet, accessible piping and equipment area for damage, leakage, pests or overheating, and keep the cover secured when the spa is not in use.
  4. Test the GFCI using its own instructions monthly and have any failed test, electrical damage or repeated tripping handled by a qualified electrician or spa technician.
  5. Follow the exact freeze-protection and winterization procedure. A partially drained system can retain water in pumps and piping, so professional winterization is safest when the spa will be shut down.
Safety and service boundary

Keep chemicals in their original containers, never mix products, follow safe temperature and health guidance, and keep children supervised with the cover secured when the spa is unattended.
