Maintain a gas fireplace

Gas fireplaces need clean air passages, intact glass and gaskets, correct ignition and safe venting even when they appear to burn normally.

Recommended timingProfessional service every year

What to do

  1. Follow the owner manual for cool-surface glass cleaning and any limited homeowner tasks.
  2. Keep louvers, air passages, the vent termination and required clearances free of lint, furniture, snow and debris.
  3. Schedule annual service by a qualified gas-hearth technician for ignition, burner, log placement, glass/gasket, controls and venting.
  4. Test carbon-monoxide alarms monthly and never operate the unit with damaged glass or missing safety screens.
Safety and service boundary

If you smell gas, stop using the appliance, leave the area and follow the gas supplier's emergency instructions. Do not troubleshoot gas controls yourself.
