Maintain an electric furnace

Electric furnaces avoid combustion concerns, but airflow, electrical controls, heating elements and blower performance still need routine care.

Recommended timingFilter monthly; professional service yearly

What to do

  1. Check the air filter monthly and clean or replace it when dirty; do not exceed the equipment manufacturer's maximum filter resistance.
  2. Keep returns, registers and the furnace area clear of storage and dust.
  3. Schedule preseason service for blower cleaning, electrical inspection, heating-element testing, controls and airflow.
  4. Record the filter size and service history.
Safety and service boundary

Internal furnace electrical work requires a qualified HVAC technician or electrician.
