Ground-level checks and professional inspections can identify damaged shingles, flashing and drainage before water reaches the interior.

What to do

  1. Inspect from the ground with binoculars for missing, lifted, cracked or curling shingles; damaged flashing; sagging; and debris accumulation.
  2. Keep gutters and downspouts clear—GAF recommends gutter cleaning at least twice a year—and direct runoff away from the foundation.
  3. Trim branches away from the roof and have accumulated debris, moss or algae handled using the shingle manufacturer's approved method.
  4. Arrange a professional roof inspection at least annually and after severe wind or hail; CertainTeed notes that twice yearly is ideal.
  5. Do not pressure-wash, coat, rejuvenate or routinely walk on shingles. ARMA advises against field-applied coatings and rejuvenators.
Safety and service boundary

Stay off the roof. Use a qualified roofing professional for close inspection, cleaning and repair.
